Kampala
Kampala is the largest city and capital of Uganda. The city is divided into five boroughs that oversee local planning: Kampala Central, Kawempe Division, Makindye Division, Nakawa Division and Lubaga Division. The city is coterminous with Kampala District.
The geographic location is also very special as it is located by the greatest lake of Africa, Lake Victoria. The geographic coordinates of Kampala are 0o19′North latitude and 32o25′East longitude. The city is of high significance since the historical times.
The presence of headquarter of the East African Development Bank in the city of Kampala makes it more significant. Some of the other places of attractions which are present in the city are Ugandan National Theatre, Bahai Houses of Worship and Ssezibwa falls.
Lira
Lira is a city in the Northern Region of Uganda. It is the main municipal, administrative and commercial centre of Lira District. Subsequently, the sub-region was divided into the districts of Amolatar, Apac, Dokolo, Lira and Oyam. Lira remains the principle commercial centre of the sub-region.
Lira is located approximately 107 kilometres (66 mi), by road, southeast of the city of Gulu, on the highway between Gulu and Mbale. The coordinates of Lira are: 02 14 56N, 32 54 00E (Latitude: 02.2490; Longitude: 32.8999). In 2008, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics estimated the population of Lira at 98,300.
Lira is served by a railway station of the Uganda Railways network. However it is currently not working. The town is also served by a public, civilian airport, Lira Airport, administered by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority.
Entebbe
Entebbe city in southern Uganda is on the northwestern shore of Lake Victoria. It is connected by road to the nearby national capital of Kampala, located 34 km (21 mi) away. The city has a noted botanical garden and an airport, one of the largest in eastern Africa.
From 1893 to 1962 Entebbe was the British colonial administrative center of Uganda. In 1976 the airport at Entebbe was the scene of an Israeli commando raid that freed more than 100 hostages from an airliner hijacked here by pro-Palestinian guerrillas.
During the 2002 national census, Entebbe’s population was estimated at 55,086 people. In 2008, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics estimated the population of the town at 70,200.
Gulu
Gulu is a city in northern Uganda. It is the commercial and administrative centre of Gulu District. The city is located at 2°46’48N 32°18’00E, on the meter gauge railway from Tororoto Pakwach. Gulu is located approximately 200 miles (320 km), by road, north of Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city.
The town is served by Gulu Airport. Gulu is the economic capital of Northern Uganda. The reduced violence since the rebel LRA moved out of Uganda has resulted in an economic revitalization.
Peace has also brought a lot of help from the International community in terms of Non-Government Organizations. These NGOs are helping the community in various ways by providing food, medical help and rehabilitation centers for formerly abducted children. The NGOs have also created many jobs.
Lugazi
Lugazi is a city in Mukono District, central Uganda. The city is also called Kawolo, and the two names are interchangeably used by the local inhabitants. The town is situated in Mukono District, on the Kampala-Jinja Highway, approximately 50 kilometers (31 mi) by road, east of Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city.
Its location is approximately 23 kilometers (14 mi), by road, east of Mukono, the district headquarters, also on the highway between Kampala and Jinja[3] The coordinates of the town are:00 23 00N, 32 52 27E.
The average elevation of the city is about 1,204 meters (3,950 ft).The 2002 national census estimated the population of Lugazi at 27,979. In 2008, the Uganda Bureau of estimated the population of the town at 32,700.
Mbale
Mbale is a city in southeastern Uganda and the chief town of the Mbale District. Mbale lies approximately 245 kilometers (152 mi), by road, northeast of Kampala, on an all weather tarmac highway.
The coordinates of the city are: 01 04 50N, 34 10 30E.The city also lies on the railway from Tororo to Pakwach. Mount Elgon, one of the highest peaks in East Africa lies nearby.
Mbale is home to the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), as well as the Moses Synagogue around which most of the Abayudaya live.
The 2002 national census put the population of Mbale at 71,130. In 2008, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics estimated that the population of the city was 84,100.
Jinja
Jinja city in southeastern Uganda is in the Eastern Region at the northern end of Napoleon Gulf of Lake Victoria. Jinja was established in 1907. Situated in an area of sugar plantations, Jinja is a lake-fishing port and the trade and industrial center of eastern Uganda.
Industries include textiles, copper smelting, soybean and grain processing, cotton and sugar milling, brewing, and manufacture of plywood and cigarettes. A dam and a large hydroelectric plant are located at Owen Falls, 2.4 km (1.5 mi) north of the city.
